Conversation in Yiddish lesson 1

Yiddish is the traditional language of the Jews of Eastern Europe, known as Ashkenazim.  It was the lingua franca for many many years.  Now however, it is only spoken in select places in the world.  As with many cultures young people haven't thought that it was useful.  But there are many Jews who speak Yiddish, in America, especially Boro Park, New York, Mea Sharim in Jerusalem.

I even performed with my women's band at a Yiddish culture event in Tel Aviv  on the auspicious date of Dec. 31 1999!  Sorry no video because we didn't have the technology then.

So here are some Yiddish phrases that you can practice with your friends!

First go to this site and do lesson 1 to get a feeling for the pronunciation,

http://www.yiddishpop.com/

And now: use this chart to practice with your grandmother or grandfather, I tell you they will love to speak Yiddish with you!!
