Everyone needs to have Hashem, our Lord God in their life. As Jews we pray everyday, but do we really study?
This is a long term project that I would like to start, to take each day another verse in the Chumash and meditate on its meaning to me personally. If my thoughts resonate with you, then comment below in the comments section.
There are many Hebrew and English bibles on-line, and today we are going to use this one to start off. Chabad Bible in Hebrew and English http://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/8165
Look at Verse 1. In the beginning Hashem created the Heavens and the Earth.
This means to me that our universe had a beginning, and maybe at some appointed time there will be an end.
In this verse we see three concepts. Hashem is our God, Heaven, and Earth.
Hashem. Is the one, who created the Heaven and Earth. There is and was and will be a prime mover. Why don't we Jews pronounce God' name? Well, it has to do with the the problem of naming eternity. Can we? We are finite beings, we are born and we will die. We are not eternal, only God is Eternal. These holy letters are for Hashem. We can look at the letters, and try to get a piece of Eternity, but as we are today, we cannot join in the Eternity except by studying God's words and deeds, so in this way we can be partners in his creations.
The word Heaven שמים is made up of the word for water. מים, the ש is that. So the Heavens are something that is made of water. But there is more to this word. It is in the dual present tense. The water is two. and it is always there. Shayim. שמים The verse doesn't say where actually the water is. but that it exists. There is Water everywhere. It is in the air, it is in the ground. Oxygen is a large amount of the Earth's crust, but it is bound up in the actual rocks as oxidates. Sometimes a volcano sets off, and some of the elemetal oxgen is let off as steam.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but we cannot use it until it is bound together with Oxygen. Then we can use it and it is life giving.
Earth. We as mankind need a place to live. As fas as we know, Our Earth is the only place that can support actual life. Yes, there might be life on other planets. Actually the closest star, Alpha Centuri 4 light years away, might have a planet that is within the habital zone, but that zone is very close to its sun and probably gets too much radiation from Alpha Centuri that if any life does evolve, it will quickly be zapped by the radiation before it can really do anything interesting. Also the Centuri system is not just one star, but a few orbiting around each other. But we don't really know, if there is life there or not. Can we go there? Probably not. Four light years sound like not so far away, but it would take an extremely long time for any of our craft to get there. As an example; The Viking spacecraft that were launched in the 1970's and went to visit to Mars, Juipter, Saturn and Neptune. The space craft just left our solar system in 2013. In order to get to the Centuri system would take thousands of Earth years.
