Chumash Bereshit Sedra א Chapter 1 Verse7

Bereshit Chapter 1 verse 7
And God made the expanse and it separated between the water that was below the expanse and the water that was above the expanse, and it was so.

In this verse, G-d separates the water above from the water below.  The waters above are in the atmosphere.  We get the water by rain,  Rain is clean.  (for the most part)  It is water that has evaporated from the ocean or other places, and because of this the molecules are very small.
When the water reaches a place in the atmosphere that is colder, it stops to rise and sits there. When it gets colder and dust particles attach to the molecules of water, it becomes too heavy to stay at that level, and sooner or later it falls as rain.

Why is there a separation between the water above and the water below?  To give us the place that we can exist.  The physical world needs a place that is not water so that when the water falls, it can act on the land and help to grow plants that provide food for animals and in time also mankind.

At this point in creation, G-d is preparing the Earth for plants and animals.  All the physical processes that we see today were started during the Creation.
My view of Creation is complicated, like all things in life. There are those who say that Creation from the Bible took place in 7 days.  Well the creative, active part was only 6 days and the 7th day was the day for rest.

But who is to say that it was 7 days of our time?  There were no people or how we mark time at this time.  Or who is going to limit what time G-d goes by?  You can also take the view that time doesn't necessarily run equally at all places in the Universe?  Does it?  Can we go there and test?  With our technology, we can't even visit the nearest star, Alpha Centuri, which might have a habitable planet, in less than 50,000 years.

Einstein proved that time can slow down or speed up.  Time can pass faster or slower depending upon how fact you are going.  The closer you are to the speed of light time doesn't run at the same rate.

How can we, as humans, limit how G-d experiences time?  So, 7 days for us would definetly be different than the time for G-d. G-d is outside of time.
