Happy Hebrew עברית בשמחה
Lesson 2
New letter ה the name of the letter is "Hay"
Sounds like H
New letter ר This letter is like the letter R in English, but sometimes there are adjustments made because it can act as a throat letter. It usually doesn't use the hatach-patach. The ר can take a shva.
Letters that we know so far:
א ה י מ נ ר ת
Handwriting of these letters
New "vowel"
ְ
Shva - place holder for the sound of the letter. א and ה most of the time do not take the ְ instead they use the ֲ
א and ה are throat letters so it is undefined how to say it with the ְ
Most of the time they will use the ֲ Hatach Patach.
Say this exercise:
יְ מְ נְ רְ תְ
te re ne me ye
Now the א and ה
אֲ הֲ
ha ah
Now cover up the transliteration and read the exercise.
Read these words that use ה including the rest of the letters:
Words that use ר Resh
Grammar: The
ּ הַ The is a bound letter attached to the noun. It needs the patach and a dot called a dagesh in the next letter. We will learn more about the dagesh later on. Most of the time we will also need the word את to complete the definite article. This word את is untranslatable and it is there because word order in Hebrew is less strict than in other languages.
מַתָּנָה is indefinite without the ה
a gift
matana
הַמַּתָּנָה
With the ה it is definite
The gift
hamatana
Now cover the transliteration and read the words!
Short dialogs to practice:
Now cover the transliteration and read the sentences!
Your turn:
Write down all the new words and their meanings. Don't use the transliteration to practice reading.
