Happy Hebrew  עברית בשמחה  Lesson 3   

מ   is the M sound 

נ    is the N sound 

Final letters of מ ם    נ   ן  sound the same. 

Letters that we have learned up to now: 

א  ה  י  מ  ם  נ  ן  ר  ת 

There are a few letters in Hebrew that have a different form when they are used at the end of a word. 

We have learned two letters מ   נ  that have a different form.  ם    ן 

Mem מ with all the vowels;

מִ	מֵ	מֶ	מַ	מָ
mee	mey	meh	ma	maaa
	מְ	מֻ	מוּ	מוֹ
	mhe	mou	mou	moh

Nun נ with all the vowels:

נִ	נֵ	נֶ	נַ	נָ
nee	ney	neh	naa	naaaa
	נְ	נֻ	נוּ	נוֹ
	nhe	nu	nu	no

Most of the time these final letters don't take a vowel, and the mouth is closed when we finish saying a word that has this letter. 

יָם   yam   a sea 

Say this word, notice how your mouth ends up closed.  This is what we call a closed syllable. 

Another word is 

 יַיִן yaaeen  wine

Say this word, your mouth ends up closed. 

Here are some more words that use these final letters: 

מָן  man  manna 

מַיִם mayim  water 

Now we will learn some new words: 

מָה ma   What ? Question word 

מַהֵר  maheir   fast 

נָאֶה naeh  nice, pleasant handsome (mas sing)

נָהָר nahar  a river, a stream 

Sentences with our new words: 

   

מָתַי אַתָּה מַהֵר.	מתי אתה מהר.	matti ata maheir.		Matti you are fast.
נִיר אַתה נָאֶה.	ניר אתה נאה.	nir at naah		Nir, you are handsome.
!יַיִן? אַההה, מַיִם	! יין? .אההה, מים	yaanin? Ah, mayim!		Wine? Ah, water!

Today we are going to practice with the vowel Patach ַ

The Patach is a line under the letter and is considered a short vowel, ahh. All the letters except for the final forms can use the Patach. 

Make sure that you watch the video and follow along on this blog post at the same time.  

Homework: Say the letters of the Hebrew Alphabet with the Patach.  Hebrew goes from right to left so we start with the Aleph on the right side.
